Curcuma longa (turmeric) has been used as a nontoxic drug in Ayurveda for centuries to treat a wide variety of disorders including rheumatism and skin diseases. Curcumin reportedly possesses several pharmacological properties including antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant, chemosensitizing, radiosensitizing, and wound healing activities. Recently it also has been reported to have potent immunomodulatory properties. |
|
It modulates the activation of T cells, B cells, macrophages, neutrophils, natural killer cells, and dendritic cells. Curcumin can also downregulate the expression of various proinflammatory cytokines including TNF, IL-1, IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, and chemokines, most likely through inactivation of the transcription factor NF-?B. Apparently curcumin is a pluripotent pharmacological agent that utilizes multiple molecular pathways to leave its imprint on biological systems. As Herabvate works by modulating the immune response its long term use is not associated with the side effects observed with Steroids which works by supressing the immune response. Calotropis gigantea: The roots of Calotropis gigantea have been used in leprosy, eczema, syphilis, elephantiasis, ulceration and cough in the Indian system of traditional medicine. It has been documented to have anti-inflammatory, wound healing, immunomodulator, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Pongamia glabra: Pongamia glabra is one of the most commonly used medicinal plant reported to have antibacterial properties agiainst gram negative and gram positive bacteria. Solanum xanthocarpum: The berries of Solanum nigrum (Solanaceae) has been reported in the ancient Indian medicinal literature with beneficial effects in inflammation and tuberculosis.
